goal

Empower Early-Career UX Professionals Through Meaningful Experience

CareerRipple aims to bridge the gap between aspiring UX designers and real-world career opportunities by creating a structured, accessible platform for hands-on experience. By understanding the challenges early-career UX professionals face in gaining relevant experience, we designed a solution that facilitates collaboration, learning, and professional growth through engaging projects. The goal was to ensure users could build their portfolios, develop industry-relevant skills, and connect with opportunities that align with their career aspirations.

Research

Understanding User Needs and Market Gaps

To ensure our solution was grounded in real user challenges, we conducted comprehensive research to uncover key pain points, existing gaps in the market, and opportunities for innovation.

To gain a broad and in-depth understanding of our target users—early-career UX professionals—we conducted two rounds of surveys and interviews. We recruited participants from Slack, LinkedIn, and UX communities.

Findings

  • Users struggled to find structured, meaningful projects that aligned with their career goals.
  • A lack of mentorship and feedback left users uncertain about their progress.
  • Group projects often lacked clear direction, making collaboration difficult.

Wireframes

Designing a comprehensive dashboard
for designers and project managers alike

One of the key challenges we tackled during the wireframing phase was ensuring a seamless experience for both junior designers seeking projects and project managers looking to start and manage their own initiatives. Instead of creating separate interfaces for these two user types, we designed a unified dashboard that catered to both needs while maintaining clarity and usability.

Usability Testing

Understanding Users' Mental Models

We conducted 11 moderated usability tests across two rounds with "early-career UXers seeking career experience". Participants engaged with our low-fidelity prototype, providing valuable insights that helped validate our design decisions while also surfacing key areas for improvement.

Results

What Worked Well

  • Participants responded positively to the lo-fi designs and included features, reinforcing many of our product and design choices.
  • The visual clarity of decision-making icons (✔️ and ❌) received positive feedback.
  • The Timeline feature stood out as an appreciated element among users.

Room for Improvement

  • Many participants initially struggled to find the "Projects" section in the navigation.
  • The project application process felt “tense” or “annoying” for some users.
  • Some participants found UI elements too small, leading to initial confusion.

High-Fidelity

Crafting a Design System

As we transitioned from low-fidelity prototypes to high-fidelity designs, it became clear that maintaining consistency, scalability, and efficiency across the team was essential. To achieve this, I developed a design system that provided a unified framework for our interface components, typography, colors, and interactions.
